JONATHAN VanDYKE: The Irrigated Husband

Fivesevendelle is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by New York-based artist Jonathan VanDyke. For his first exhibition in Boston, VanDyke has re-oriented the gallery space, both adding and extracting elements from the gallery’s historic Mission Hill interiors. The space takes on the feel of a stage, where both object and viewer perform.

A key element of the show is an article from Architectural Digest highlighting the Miami apartment of baseball player Mike Piazza and his wife, Alicia. The article shows Piazza, who in 2002 famously held a press conference to announce that he is “not gay,” kneeling behind his wife, her bare feet propped on a beige couch; they both sport loose white shirts. Behind the couple hangs a giant, horizontal Kenneth Noland stripe painting (Noland’s wife was the editor of Architectural Digest). Using a method that has become widely popular for reproducing family snapshots as “paintings,” VanDyke has printed this article onto canvas. He then placed the canvases inside of thick wood frames and behind glass. Each piece, moreover, is pierced by a tube. Liquid paint drips from these tubes, so that the interiors of the frames slowly fill up with colored liquid. The continued staining of the image belies the presentation of a happy couple, thereby revealing, according to VanDyke, “how strangely clean and colorless their habitat is, and how their guise is curiously overperformed.”

A second group of works appears inside of fivesevendelle’s front gallery, in which VanDyke has built a “white cube.” New walls cover up the extant decorative molding, while sealing off the regular entrance into the gallery. The artist has opened up a small corridor underneath the stairs – normally used for storage – as the only point of access for this gallery. Seven vertically-oriented paintings are hung in this brightly lit cube. VanDyke salvaged the canvas for these paintings from a performance piece he mounted last year, where it had hung as a curtain backdrop. For that performance – loosely based upon a photograph of Kenneth Noland’s assistants kneeling on the studio floor, at work on staining a canvas –VanDyke hired two men to sit in front of the curtain for several hours, with paint dripping onto their torsos. The canvas curtain was irrigated by tubing that stained it with paint for the duration of the HQ show. VanDyke ripped apart and re-worked sections of this curtain, rebuilding in his studio the irrigation system that he employed in the gallery. The canvases have accumulated the grime and dirt of the studio and of the former installation; accidental marks live side by side with areas drenched in color, while the holes from the irrigation system (since removed, making the works “dry”) are now open to the walls behind them. The works are framed in austere constructions made from ubiquitous, Ikea-grade materials – white formica and MDF. It is difficult to know what is considered and what is accidental in these paintings, or if they are even paintings at all. Marked by the action of both stage and studio, the works recall those Yves Klein canvases that are both imprints of a bodily action and fields of dense color.

As with the artist’s previous exhibitions, he inserts a performance into the opening. This non-narrative performance does not need to be watched from start to finish, but is framed as an ulterior event coinciding with the social situation that is the opening itself. Two women sit upon the fivesevendelle’s stairway, where they apply, remove, and re-apply layers of make-up on one another’s faces.
The face becomes equated with the surface of the canvas, while the act of beautification, performed in silence, becomes a ritual of communication between two women.

Jonathan VanDyke’s recent solo exhibitions include Gloved Impediment at HQ in Brooklyn and The Hole in the Palm of Your Hand at Scaramouche in New York. He received an MFA from Bard College, and attended the Skowhegan School as well as the Glasgow School of Art. Within the last year his work has been reviewed in artslant, White Hot Magazine, TimeOut New York, and Art Forum, and a feature-length article appeared on him in Modern Painters. In The Echo as Original Sound, artists Gina Siepel and Christopher Carroll explore and delight in ambiguous collisions of nature and culture. Their works echo, commemorate, and re-frame iconic cultural images and actions of Americans in nature. This exhibit features sculptural works, video, and photography by both artists.

In The Boy Mechanic Project, Gina Siepel builds objects from a series of books called The Boy Mechanic, published between 1913 – 1925. Siepel has examined this period in American history, transplanted this series of historical exercises into her own contemporary life, and inserted them into a paradigm of fluid gender identity and a post-industrial ecological reality. Siepel’s Boy Mechanic Project seeks to recontextualize the Boy Mechanic, both celebrating and ironizing his origins.

Christopher Carroll’s Trophy series echoes his struggle to engage with the natural environment that he encounters as a result of urban life. Performing as an iconic but not-quite-right hunter/soldier/explorer character in urban natural sites such as the Fenway, Carroll both engages in and parodies particularly American stereotypes of masculinity in nature. His works explore humor, failure, and ultimately Romanticism as they enact an urban fantasy world of an almost unreachable Nature.

The exhibition takes its title from a passage in Thoreau’s Walden, in which he described the sounds of church bells from nearby villages reverberating through the woods. He noted that the bells became as much part of the trees as of the man-made steel bells from which they originated. Through their work, both artists echo Thoreau’s observation that nature and culture are inseparable. The works by Siepel and Carroll explore and complicate the American relationship to landscape and identity. These explorations are simultaneously joyous and critical, nostalgic and ironic, romantic and irreverent.

A group of student-artists from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design are investigating Mission Hill’s history and everyday situations as a point of departure for site-responsive projects. They are developing projects that are situated in the public sphere and that aim to be both socially and spatially engaging in relation to the surrounding communities. The group is focused on researching, discovering and developing a range of temporary, non-destructive and pedestrian-friendly projects in situ.

In the month of April, the group will occupy a project space in the neighborhood which will function as a creative laboratory, a repository for research findings, and a place to present ideas and engage in a dialogue with the community. The lab space will be open to the public every Monday from 2:00-5:00 p.m., with the exception of April 19, Patriots Day. During the first weeks of May, each self-directed project will be temporarily installed, activated, distributed or performed within the neighborhood. Further details will be announced.

This initiative is in partnership with Massart’s Center for the Arts and Community Partnerships; CACP cultivates innovative, sustainable relationships with the broader community to explore and expand the relevance of art in public life. It is also in partnership with fivesevendelle; a creative project space in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston located in a brownstone dating from 1875. The space is dedicated to providing a professional exhibition environment and a platform for creative interaction within the surrounding communities. fivesevendelle is pleased to present Half Life, an exhibition of new work by Corey Corcoran. Through paintings, mixed media, and site-specific installation, Corcoran creates dense visual ecosystems. Using everything from plaster to watercolor and faux fur, his landscapes teeter on the edge of collapse and fruition. Half-dead bodies fill these transitory spaces as gods of destruction or biological fodder for its change. Color, texture, and pattern act as the primordial soup from which the notion of progress and finality may arise.

Corey Corcoran is a Boston-based painter whose work has been exhibited nationally at such venues as OCCCA in Santa Ana, CA and K Space Contemporary in Corpus Christi, TX. Corcoran received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2007 and is a recipient of the prestigious Stephen D. Paine Scholarship Award from the Boston Art Dealers Association as well as the New Art ‘08 award from the Kingston Gallery. His work was featured in the experimental publication Apenest Volume II as well as breach dynamics, a book produced by the international creative consortium ROJO®.

fivesevendelle is a creative project space in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston located in a brownstone dating from 1875. The space is dedicated to providing a professional exhibition environment and a platform for creative interaction within the surrounding communities.

The Boston artists Jack W. Schneider, Alexander DeMaria, and Todd White came together in January to present “Dude, where’s my apocalypse?” at the fivesevendelle project space.

One of the most compelling aspects of the show is the impetus and effect of the grouping of the three artists. DeMaria, White and Schneider may not seem to be the likeliest combination to be sharing this space, which is one floor of a 19th century brownstone located in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood Stylistically, the greatest kinship lies between White and DeMaria, who render many of their drawings in meticulously inked details. White’s images are somewhat grotesque and supernatural in nature, reminiscent of adolescent doodles that have evolved into elaborate accomplishments of design. The intricacy of drawings like “Bipolar Monster” and “Happy Twins” is mesmerizing. DeMaria’s pen-and-ink drawings are as equally detailed as White’s work, but the artists deviate in their choice of subject matter. DeMaria’s mythological focus clashes with the mystical fantasy of White’s drawings, yet they still both illustrate an interest in ecologically-themed deities or monsters. DeMaria’s “The Sleeping Moss” and White’s “Caveman Man” each blend an anthropomorphic creature with a geological formation.

Schneider’s contributions to the exhibition come largely in the form of a varied grouping of paintings. Several of his pieces are boldly patterned images on mid-sized wood panels and in content, this work deals with concepts of physical breakdown and decay. While also engaging in an exploration of the artistic process, the paintings’ theme of natural process offers a fit analogy to the work of DeMaria and White. Contrasting the patterned works is “Mulberry Street,” a small watercolor set apart in an enclave. Unlike its bolder companions, the painting is a realistic representation of a coffee cup and surrounding detritus. Both the work’s familiar imagery and its overt sense of abandon detracts from the show.

The connection between the three artists occurs thematically—and not necessarily obviously—through the show’s focus on unexpected juxtapositions: combinations of the folk and the modern. This is also where the show’s title finds its relevance. The artists, for the most part, do not deal with the apocalypse in traditional, overt ways such as the eerie stillness of an abandoned coffee cup. This is where much of the show’s power and charm lies. Their works as displayed at fivesevendelle share a feeling, a mood that begins to hint at the artists’ personal concepts of the apocalypse, and that feeling is not ominous, but unsettling and that sense not of danger, but of a unexplainable discomfort. It is evoked by White’s “Word as Flesh in the Nebulous Bonestorm” and, very differently, by Schneider’s “Houndstooth 2.0.” Schneider suggests that it’s what we don’t know that makes us afraid. He speaks about how, throughout history, the apocalypse has been represented by different cultures in various ways and it’s not always inexorable doom. “What gets confused a lot, though,” he says, “is that a lot of people picture the post-apocalypse as being just devastation and ruin. Thinking Biblically, people used to actually consider the coming of the apocalypse as a good thing, and the post-apocalypse as paradise.” This take on the subject comes across subtly in the work of all three artists, who do not portray doom, but rather uncertainty and a state of limbo that can also be interpreted optimistically, as potential.
